Biography

Eric Nuzum combines his life-long interest in music and civil liberty to write Parental Advisory: Music Censorship in the America.

Raised in Canton, Ohio, Nuzum started his college career at Kent State University. While a student, he worked as a deejay at the university's student-run radio station, played in several local bands, and peddled CDs in several local record shops. While taking a five-year break from school, he also worked as a bartender and club deejay. Nuzum's interest in civil rights began when he won a grade-school essay contest on the U.S. Constitution. As an adult, he devotes time and energy to many social causes--including the fight against censorship in the arts and music.

Nuzum's most-noted work with music censorship began as a web site (entitled "a brief history of banned music") created for a Freedom of Speech class at Kent State University. Shortly thereafter, the site gained the attention of Netscape Inc. and was featured on their home page as a "What's Cool On The Net." That publicity soon led to the site receiving thousands of visitors each day. Since its creation, the web site has won awards for design and content and has been reviewed in a variety of publications, including Entertainment Weekly and the Houston Chronicle. Yahoo Internet Life magazine included the site in an article profiling web sites created to make the world a better place. One of those thousands of visitors was an editor at William Morrow and Company, who started discussions with author Eric Nuzum about writing a book on this subject. Three years later, we have Parental Advisory.

Nuzum's writing career includes articles and reviews on books, movies and music for Open new window The Cleveland Free Times and Open new window PublicInteractive.com, amongst other publications. His essays have been heard on National Public Radio and Public Radio International's Open new window Marketplace. He also regularly reviews public television programming for Current (a public broadcasting trade newspaper). Nuzum is also the Program Director at Open new window WKSU-FM, Open new window Kent State University's National Public Radio affiliate for Akron and Cleveland--one of the most highly regarded public radio stations in the country.
